Issue #179 [Archived Newsletters] January, 2021

NATIONAL SERRO SCOTTY ORGANIZATION NEWS

Last month on the "what were we doing in December 2005" link in the newsletter I featured the picture George Carlson is holding in this picture. I was happy to hear from George afterwards and he sent me this 2020 update with his grandson Evan (in the original picture with George), who is now 17 and a high school junior. Thanks for the update George!

Fishtown, Leland, Michigan is a place that we will visit from our Traverse City camp-out in May, 2021 (covid permitting). At Leland, besides visiting the cute shops in Fishtown, we will hit the beach (it is on Lake Michigan) to look for Charlevoix stones, Petoskey stones and Leland Blue stones. Leland Blue is actually slag used in a smelting process in the 1800s. It was dumped offshore from Leland then and is still washing up on shore today. We will use the rock picking bags that Mabel bought for each of us. RIP Mabel, your kindness and generosity will be forever missed. If you've not reserved a site for this event, you can do so now!

Also in May, 2021, we will camp again at Algonac State Park. This campground is on the St. Clair River which is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway that ships use to come from the Atlantic into the Great Lakes. Right across the river from Algonac is Canada. We will watch freighters coming and going from our riverside seats at Michael and Jamie Leichty's site as they got the last riverside site. The rest of us are across the road from them. Reserve your site (SOON)!

In June we camp in Pennsylvania at French Creek State Park, this is one of the sites there. We have been able to reserve sites for more than six months and many of us have. Reserve your site!

In September we will return to the beautiful mountains of north Georgia. Like the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, north Georgia is home to many waterfalls. Expect to do a lot of site seeing, if you want, while we are there. Reserve your site.
