Meet Sharon and Glenn Lockmon

Vintage, classic, crazy! Glenn and I are all of these!

Glenn and Sharon at their Scotty Christening Party

We have spent all 43 years of our married life in Colorado, mostly in Littleton which is a suburb near the foothills. We met and married in 5 months in 1966 and always ‘walked the line’ and ‘stayed in the box.’ Glenn retired 9 year ago, and for me it has been 7. Six years ago, Glenn and I were driving home from somewhere and Glenn turned to me and said, ‘I think we should buy a classic car.’ My response was ‘Really, you don’t even change your own oil!?’ Glenn had no idea that I would find a classic car off the internet near Sioux City, Iowa. Within a couple weeks, we took off to see the 1963 Ford Fairlane that was similar to the one Glenn had when we married. Much to my surprise, Glenn decided not to buy it. He kicked himself all the way back to CO and as soon as we got home, I coaxed and encouraged him to call the guy back. He did. Within a week, we were in Iowa again and exchanged money for title and car! The very next year we bought a 1965 Buick Skylark Convertible which has become our darling. With the Buick, we are in the Colorado Classic Convertible Club and go on road trips, tours, and attend car shows. If you are interested, go to www.Coloradoconvertibles.org for our website. We also own a 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible! Our insurance agent loves us!!

A couple of our good friends in the Club had a scaled down replica of a 1947 Aero Float trailer built to their specifications. It turned out looking shiny and sleek, yet expensive. We were not going to be outdone by them, and through our Car Club we met yet another couple who summer in Estes Park, CO. Neil and Marti had a Scotty and knew we were interested. Soon, we made connections with an older man, another summer resident of Estes. He was the owner of a never titled, dull and dim Scotty trailer, hiding in the rocks and weeds in the rugged hills. We had our cash money in hand, but the guy was not happy with our offer. Glenn negotiated down with him and the guy called me inside. He and I chatted and he made out a hand written bill of sale.

Their Scotty as found

A week or so later, in the late summer of 2005, Glenn and friend Bob, drove to Estes with a flatbed trailer to pick up the 1960 Scotty Sportsman that looked like an orphan. Late that evening the Scotty was rolled down the flatbed to the driveway. My goodness, we were not prepared for the condition of the interior! It apparently had had a re-do probably in the 70’s with an ugly herculon plaid design. It was used as a hunting trailer as we found a Wild Turkey (not the bird kind) bottle tucked away. Glenn, who was in the construction field for more than 50 years, was sure he could resurrect the Scotty. He spent many, many hours with elbow grease, Bar Keepers Friend and MetAll and a buffer polishing, and buffing. He was not happy with the outcome, so we finally found the polished aluminum not far from Denver and purchased it. What is money?? He kept the old siding for pattern and converted our garage into the Scotty workshop. Glenn actually did not work on the Scotty all of 2006, but resumed the task in 2007.

As most Scotty trailers, this Scotty had lots of rot and mildew and nastiness. Glenn designed the new interior with Birch, Maple and Maghoney, and kept the wood natural. We both love the Coca Cola design so had the cushions made from a neat Coke fabric. Glenn made the upholstery drawings and took it into an upholstery shop that specializes in autos. We were not disappointed! The Coke pattern has the Coke red and goes into the aqua color. While I was searching for bargains at Target, I found wonderful aqua plaid table runners and placemats that were Thomas O’Brien Christmas designs! I cut and sewed these to make curtains! The aqua goes perfectly with the Coke yard goods. We put in an oven and stove top from Cabela’s, and a small fridge! I use my Mom’s 8 cup percolator which is a childhood memory! Our dishes and glasses are Coca Cola in design, complete with Coke playing cards, and Coke tic-tac-toe.

One of the unique things about this Scotty is the rounded corners which are actually PVC pipe that is sanded and then stained lightly. It adds a unique ‘look.’ We use an inverter (hidden in the storage under the front table) and are able to use power off the battery.
Glenn has designed an exhaust fan which is disguised behind the birch backsplash of the stove area. Our potty rolls out from under the rear storage! The Scotty is trimmed in a burgundy color that matches our Buick Skylark. The laminate for the counter and table is the Formica brand and it is the retro Boomerang Skylark pattern. Glenn is an accomplished cabinet man, and designed the table, counter, and cabinets himself.

Glenn finished the Scotty in April of 2008, and we had a party to celebrate:
Scotty’s Christening! We invited 60 friends and they dressed in Sixty period clothes, and each brought a potluck item of the 60’s. …jello, potato salad, sloppy joes,. Each couple received a little gift bag with thirty one cents inside. Gasoline, in 1960, was actually thirty one cents a gallon! We had soda pop in flavors, and beers of the time; Pabst, Falstaff, pony bottles of Miller, etc. For wine we had ‘Happy Camper’ and ‘Twin Fin’ which pictures none other than a classic red convertible! Our friends Bob and Linda came to the party as Bubba and Louise of the Trailer Park. Bob did the christening speech and told the story of how they brought Scotty home after landing it on the flatbed. We used a bag of pork rinds rather than a champagne bottle for the christening so as to not put a dent in the new mirrored aluminum!

Our next outing for Scotty was a Car Show at the Abbey in Canon City, CO. As we drove into the area, onlookers were literally walking and running alongside, wanting to catch a first peek. The Scotty trailers out here in the West are not well-known. We literally had to request the onlookers to step aside as we readied the Scotty for scores of onlookers! The next day we towed Scotty to Florence, CO and were positioned on their Main Street for their Antique Car Show. Again, we had hordes of people interested.

We repeated this scenario at most shows we attended. At Halloween, we invited friends and passed out Trick and Treat candy from the spooky and ghoulish Scotty. This spring, in April of 2009, we hope to attend Kamp Kansas! We just made our reservation and are looking forward to meeting everyone. The name of our business is ‘Almost Retired’ and our schedule allows us to travel on a flexible time frame.

…To the Good Times!
